ABOUT  WETHEFOUNDERS
DAO COMMUNITY

TL;DR

A Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (known as a DAO) specifically for the purposes of collecting survey data from start-ups and scaleups across Australia. Anyone filling out the survey is rewarded with a community token which indicates membership of the DAO and confers certain benefits including a governance role in key decisions of the DAO. The DAO sells access to this data to government, corporates and any other start-up ecosystem members who want to use it,. The community decides how to use any proceeds

ABSTRACT

There is real potential (and now political will) behind the transformation of Australia into a sustainable tech driven economy. Australia enjoys an increasingly thriving start-up ecosystem although activity tends to be well meaning yet siloed, leading to duplication and other inefficiencies.

Many public and private organisations have separately identified the need for data on the start-up ecosystem for various purposes. As a result the start-ups themselves have become increasingly frustrated and fatigued by the constant surveys often asking for the same or similar information. That has led to a decrease in participation and no doubt, in the quality of the data itself.

This combination of forces has led to the creation of a Social Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (known as a DAO) specifically for the purposes of collecting survey data from start-ups and scaleups across Australia. Anyone filling out the survey is rewarded with a community token which indicates membership of the DAO and confers certain membership benefits.

The DAO sells access to this data to government, corporates and any other start-up ecosystems members who want to use it. The community decides how to use any such proceeds.

Called We the Founders, the core objective is to build a founder-driven online community with the purpose of transforming Australia into a sustainable tech-driven economy.

The DAO is run by a core team who would build the necessary infrastructure to begin with and then run the community itself on the journey to decentralisation.

As far as possible, the DAO uses open-source applications for the tech stack building on the Solana blockchain (because of Solana’s environmentally preferable ‘proof of stake’ approach).

Given the nascent stage of web 3 in general and DAOs in particular (especially from a regulatory point of view) there are a range of watchouts and risks, some of which can be mitigated. However, fundamentally this is a new concept and application, but built around the construction of a ‘public good’ (in the form of the survey’s data cube) delivering a range of social and economic benefits which we hope will attract support from the whole ecosystem.
